4. Smoking

It is a well-known fact that smoking is injurious to health. Smoking causes damage to the cell membranes and neurons of the part of the brain which controls coordination, balance, and motor skill. Smoking also disrupts the processing of language, perception, and memory.

If you are a smoker, you should quit now though some damage has already been done to the brain. However, according to researchers quitting smoking can restore some of the lost thickness of the cortex. Ex-chain smokers who have not smoked for more than 25 years have a thinner cortex than non-smokers.
